The
Opera/Music Theater Vocal Workshop is a unique opportunity
for adult singers of all abilities and styles to study with master
teachers and perfomers Kyle Engler and Daniel Lau in a beautiful
intimate setting. Limited to 15 singers, the Vocal Workshop will
focus on opera and musical theater repertoire and provide opportunities
for singers to work on technique, learn new music, and enhance
their love for music.

Schedule
Overview
Participants may arrive on Friday of the camp weekend anytime after
4 pm. Dinner will be served about 7 pm, and the camp will open with
a brief welcome and performance following the meal. Departures should
be planned for Monday, following the final camp luncheon.
BYOB! - Guests are invited to
bring alcoholic beverages to suit their own taste.
Linens - Participants and companions should bring their own
sheets and towels. If you prefer, linens can be provided for a small
fee.
Accommodations
Participants will be lodged in a luxury beach cottage located on the
Outer Banks. Amenities include good food - and lots of it!- spacious
meeting rooms for classes, decks, and the breathtaking sunrises and
endless unspoiled beaches of the Outer Banks. Participants may choose
to lodge in a private suite, to share a room with another musician,
or to bring a non-participant guest who can enjoy the beach and local
attractions. Massage will be available for a fee, and morning yoga is
included. Great food. Beautiful homes. Natural beauty of the banks.
And great music.
Class
Descriptions
Death by Aria - Campers
will come with a prepared piece of their choice for presentation without
rehearsal with Dr. Daniel Lau. (Be sure to bring an extra copy of all
of your music). We will video each camper and review it. This will be
a light-hearted preparation for auditions that is designed to be fun
and educational.
Creating a character
- Campers will bring an opera or musical selection. We will work to
develop motivation to establish a convincing character.
Unknown vocal gems -
We will introduce music by little-known composers or lesser-known pieces
by well-known composers for introduction and enjoyment. This will help
expand your repertoire.
Daily Vocal Technique
- Breathing, support, practice techniques, etc.
Language/diction
- International phonetics alphabet (IPA) will be taught, and general
communication using words will be emphasized.
Private coaching sessions
- Everyone will have the opportunity to work privately with Kyle
and Daniel working on pieces of singer's choice.
Masterclasses - The
chance to sing and perform in front of peers is a great learning experience.
Cabaret night - Participants
will perform for each other at a special end-of-camp fun concert. Almost
anything goes!! Participants will be given a CD two weeks prior to the
start of camp with music for enjoyment and possible performance. It
will also include chamber and ensemble pieces that might also be included
in the camp.
Listening library
will be available at the camp.

About
Kyle Engler and Daniel Lau
Proclaimed
"a virtuoso of a high order" by the Baltimore Sun, mezzo soprano
Kyle Engler has been praised for her extreme versatility
in opera, oratorio, and chamber music. As a performer on the opera
stage, she has sung the roles of the Secretary in Menotti's The
Consul, Charlotte in Werther, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Lucretia
in The Rape of Lucretia, Mercedes in Carmen, and Cherubino in
Le nozze di Figaro to name a few. In January, 2005, Ms. Engler
was cast by Placido Domingo to premier the role of Lydia Dudley
in Washington National Opera's production of Democracy, An American
Comedy by Scott Wheeler, garnering rave reviews in major publications
around the country. She also premiered the role of Retinue in
Augusta Read-Thomas' opera Ligeia, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich,
in Evian, France. Ms. Engler has been a featured soloist with
many orchestras most recently performing Beethoven's 9th Symphony
with the Lancaster Symphony. An advocate of contemporary chamber
music, Ms. Engler has collaborated with the Ravel Trio, the Morpheus
Trio, the New Horizons Chamber Ensemble, and celebrated pianist
Andre Watts. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music with
a Master of Music degree, Engler has studied with Phyllis Bryn-Julson,
Thomas Hauser, and Russell Penney. Ms. Engler is the Director
of Vocal Studies at McDaniel College.
Pianist
Daniel Lau has received enthusiastic press notices for
both his solo and chamber performances. The Washington Post praised
his "exemplary artistry;" the Baltimore Sun noted "Lau's beautifully
shaded playing;" the Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster, PA) lauded
his "flair, great technical proficiency and expressiveness;" and
La Liberté (Fribourg, Switzerland) cited "playful nuances, translucent
phrasing, and miraculous sonorities." Dr. Lau has appeared in
recitals and with orchestras throughout North America and Europe.
He collaborates frequently with singers internationally and is
a founding member of the acclaimed Ravel Trio. Dr. Lau is committed
to the performance of living composers. He has premiered many
solo and chamber music works, and most recently received a Peabody
Development Grant to record the piano works of ASCAP award-winning
composer Dr. Daniel Crozier. He will also be recording the piano
trios and cello/piano sonata of Grammy-award winning composer
Benjamin Lees with the Ravel Trio during the next year. An avid
lover of opera, Dr. Lau has conducted performances of The Old
Maid and the Thief, Manon, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Merry
Widow, The True Story of Cinderella, Carmen, and The Magic Flute.
Dr. Lau received a Bachelor of Music degree from Loma Linda University,
magna cum laude, where he won the coveted Dean's Award. He received
his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the
Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University while becoming a
member of the Pi Kappa Lambda honorary society. He has studied
with Lillian Freundlich, Anita Norskov Olsen, Samuel Sanders,
and Jerome Lowenthal. He has taught at Columbia Union College,
the Pennsylvania Academy of Music, and maintains a private studio
in his home in Baltimore, MD.
